A rare vintage photograph of an onna-bugeisha, one of the female warriors of the upper social classes in feudal Japan.

Often mistakenly referred to as “female samurai”, female warriors have a long history in Japan, beginning long before samurai emerged as a warrior class.

This one time I was Milan and I’m literally around multi-millionaires and billionaires at this dinner and Dita Von Teese gets on stage and she gets buck naked and she spins around in a big martini glass and everyone clapped for her. And it’s bullshit. It’s not fair that it’s OK for her to do it because she doing it for rich white people but you know I was in like, the hood, and I did what I had to do to survive… and I constantly get ridiculed.

Your Veil is a Battleground - Phase Two is a continuation of my project inspired by Barbara Kruger’s controversial work, “Your body is a battle ground”. Phase Two explores the different ways young Iranian women choose to wear the veil. Hijab is implemented as a fashion element, accompanied with distinctive make-up and colorful headscarves. Young women use these elements to empower themselves and to make a statement. One might argue that the make-up itself, is also a form of veil.

Sarah Robles is the strongest woman in America. She’s beaten every other competitor, male and female, to become the highest-ranked lifter in the USA. She’s an Olympian at 23. She could lift your entire nuclear family and throw them, and she lives on 400 bucks a month because for some mysterious reason she can’t get endorsement deals.

C’mon culture, stop being fucked up. Strength is beauty and Sarah Robles is a role model with no exposure.

Chasing your dream and being powerful = feminine as all fuck.

EDIT: There is now a fundraiser to help fund her journey to the Olympics!

In the United States, rape is more common than smoking. ›

Misogyny in the U.S. = a national pandemic.

===

Sexual violence is a pervasive public health problem in the United States. In December 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey.  Throughout the country, headlines of local and national papers described that rape is more common than previously thought.

Today an article published in on Significance Magazine’s web site, a publication of  the American Statistical Association and Royal Statistical Society, compared these rates to those of smoking – 18.3% of women over 18 reported being sexual assaulted in their lifetime while 17.4% of women reported smoking. Let consider this as we set health priorities.

Many women of color, like their Anglo counterparts, eschew the term ‘feminism’ while agreeing with it’s goals (the right to an abortion, equality in job hiring, girls’ soccer teams). But women of color also dismiss the label because the feminist movement has largely focused on the concerns of middle-class women… . Attempts to address the racism of the feminist movement have largely been token efforts without lasting effects. Many young women of color still feel alienated from a mainstream feminism that doesn’t explicitly address race… . Feminism in the United States has stagnated in part because it has largely neglected a class and race analysis.

Reporter: I have a question to Robert and to Scarlett. Firstly to Robert, throughout Iron Man 1 and 2, Tony Stark started off as a very egotistical character but learns how to fight as a team. And so how did you approach this role, bearing in mind that kind of maturity as a human being when it comes to the Tony Stark character, and did you learn anything throughout the three movies that you made?

And to Scarlett, to get into shape for Black Widow did you have anything special to do in terms of the diet, like did you have to eat any specific food, or that sort of thing?

Scarlett: How come you get the really interesting existential question, and I get the like, “rabbit food” question?
