A little history we have not covered before…

This picture is from the Basque derby in 1975.  Here we see La Real captain Inaxio Kortabarria and Athletic captain Jose Angel Iribar carrying the Ikurrina onto the field to be placed upon the center-circle.  This was the first public display of the Basque flag since the death of Spanish dictator Franco, which was technically still illegal.

this halloween i went as my favorite mexican manchester united striker, javier ‘chicharito’ hernandez. i took a giant pea suit to get official epl name and numbering from my bootleg jersey guy in corona. i also rocked some man u socks and a man u scarf. suffice to say, i was a big hit at el vagabundo on queens blvd around 4am on sat night. i even got to go hang inside the taco truck for a bit. it was a queens halloween miracle.

Not our best game. Sevilla’s defense was solid, and Javi Varas put on the best goalkeeping display I’ve seen in quite some time. It was a good goalkeeping day overall, Valdes saved us several times in the first half as well, covering for our defense’s mistake.

But a draw isn’t a bad result, it’s not the end of the world or Liga or whatever. This year (like last year) we have a front-heavy season and at this point, we’ve played a substantial chunk of the top teams in the league. We were lacking against Sevilla, no doubt about it but the season is long and we’re bound to have off days (like Saturday).

Vintage Football Fans

Some great shots of football fans from another age. From top to bottom and left to right ..

  • An Everton fan celebrates his team’s 3-0 FA Cup final win over Man City in 1933.
  • Spectators at the old Crystal Palace football ground get a great if uncomfortable view of the game.
  • West Ham fans at their FA Cup semi against Everton in 1933 at Molineux
  • West Ham fans again. This time on their way to the first Wembley Cup Final in 1923
  • An ecstatic Littlewoods pools winner from the 1930s
  • A Wolves fan in 1949 enjoys a cigarette. Could have been taken yesterday.
