Bobby Seale looking over bags of food being donated to the black community.

I think it’s telling that folks are more likely to circulate images of the BPP holding guns than they are of them passing out food. Even folks who supposedly support/ed the party. Guns are sexy and ~political~and virulent and masculine—groceries bags of food—that’s not what revolution is about. Except, that’s exactly what revolution is about.

Live

this is why, this is why the government destroyed the BPP, because they were winning the hearts and minds of the people, and most importantly the YOUTH..

Free food to people who need it is more revolutionary than ten thousand bullets.

The three winners (‘Argo,’ ‘Zero Dark Thirty,’ and ‘Homeland’) have all been sold as complex, nuanced productions that don’t shy away from hard truths about US foreign policy. And liberal audiences can’t get enough of them. Perhaps it’s because, alongside the odd bit of self-criticism, they are all so reassuringly insistent that, in an increasingly complicated world, America just keeps on doing the right thing. And even when it does the wrong thing – such as, I don’t know, torture and drone strikes and deadly invasions – it is to combat far greater evil, and therefore OK.

[Some Indian and “Western” commentators] have reduced India’s rape crisis to a cultural problem. Men, we are told – specifically, Indian men – are culturally lacking and barbaric. They have no concept of women’s rights or equality. They are born and bred to sexually assault and degrade women. This is a familiar phenomenon, and an outgrowth of colonialism. When horrible crimes happen, specifically to women, we reduce the culture, in this case, of about 1 billion people, to a gang-bang-enabling society of rapists. And of course, by blaming Indian culture specifically, Western sexism is brushed under the table. We arrive at Gayatri Spivak’s formula explaining the colonial exploitation of anti-woman violence in colonized societies: “white men saving brown women from brown men”.

The process of reducing brown men to savages has been all too familiar in recent years. We have seen Egyptian men reduced to “animals” and “beasts” by the New York Post because a mob high on a combination of stupidity and jubilation about Mubarak’s downfall brutally assaulted white reporter Lara Logan. We have seen a number of “native informants,” from Mona Eltahawaly to Hirsi Ali, tell us that Arab and Muslim men “hate” women. In typical colonial fashion, gender dynamics, including real crimes and acts of brutality, are reduced to “cultural” problems in which we can reduce entire societies to large gang-bang parties predicated on savage men who simply prey on women.

[photo: a mural in Chicago reads, “no human being is illegal. national security is used to foster inter ethnic tension.” there is surrounding artwork that includes butterflies and flowers resting on barbed wire that is also draped at some points with torn flags.]

This one time I was Milan and I’m literally around multi-millionaires and billionaires at this dinner and Dita Von Teese gets on stage and she gets buck naked and she spins around in a big martini glass and everyone clapped for her. And it’s bullshit. It’s not fair that it’s OK for her to do it because she doing it for rich white people but you know I was in like, the hood, and I did what I had to do to survive… and I constantly get ridiculed.

from the Tamms Ten Year exhibit at Saic, where inmates from Tamms supermax prison could submit requests for their photos to be altered/produced in some way to show a different reality than them living behind bars. here is one: “I would like my own picture done with an alternate background from the IDOC.com picture. I have no pictures of myself to give my friends & family. It would mean a great deal to me. If this is not able to be done then I’ll leave the picture for you to decide. If you can place my picture on another background, nothing too much please. Something simple like a blue sky with clouds or a sunset in the distance would be fine.” — why do we continue to imprison those who need healing? how foolish of us— we ALL need healing yet we continue to place people behind bars for their own “good” to punish them. a system of punishment & oppression will NEVER create change.

‎Obama has been consistent in his refusal to confront the racism unleashed by his his candidacy and subsequent election that came atop post-9/11 Muslim-bashing and dehumanization of people of color inherent in warmongering abroad. […] In 2010, when he traveled to India, Obama refused to visit the main shrine of Sikhism, the Golden Temple in Amritsar, because he did not want to be photographed wearing a Sikh headcovering and be confused for a Muslim by illiterate Americans back home. […] ‎His reponse to accusations that he’s Muslim is never ‘so what if I were?’ but always along the lines of “No, no I’m a Christian like you.

One of the dead, Prakash Singh, was a priest who recently immigrated to the United States with his wife and two young children, said Justice Singh Khalsa, a temple member since the 1990s.

Relatives of Kaleka, the president of the temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, said Monday that he was killed fighting the attacker.

“From what we understand, he basically fought to the very end and suffered gunshot wounds while trying to take down the gunman,” said Kanwardeep Singh Kaleka, his nephew.

“He was a protector of his own people, just an incredible individual who showed his love and passion for our people, our faith, to the end,” the nephew said, near tears. “He was definitely one of the most dedicated individuals I have ever seen, one of the happiest people in the world.

Sarah Robles is the strongest woman in America. She’s beaten every other competitor, male and female, to become the highest-ranked lifter in the USA. She’s an Olympian at 23. She could lift your entire nuclear family and throw them, and she lives on 400 bucks a month because for some mysterious reason she can’t get endorsement deals.

C’mon culture, stop being fucked up. Strength is beauty and Sarah Robles is a role model with no exposure.

Chasing your dream and being powerful = feminine as all fuck.

EDIT: There is now a fundraiser to help fund her journey to the Olympics!
